I Can See Clearly Now the Rain is Gone

Blog 9:
How have you changed since the beginning of this trip?

Example: "When I came here I was ready to observe the differences between a 1st world country like the U.S. and a 3rd World country like the Dominican Republic. Now I see that there are a lot more similarities than differences between the two. So now I ask myself, what made it this way?"

This experience has been truely life changing, but in a way I will
struggle to vocalize. There is a different wave length of existence here. I
feel like when I come back to the states I will be pissed'off and stressed
for a while because of how people will interact and act--fast, unwilling
to really work for what they need, edsiring fast solutions answers and fixes, unaware of collectives and their place
as a group and in a community. I have and have not felt like the
oppressor here. On one hand, it is hard not to. We walked through these villages where
people had built shacks along the bank of a very polluted river, and
watched as children played naked in the river, and looked into homes with out
water , electricity or floors where 5 families lived.
Then we went back to our rooms and complained about bugs, etc. The next
day, we said we were business stuents and went to the free trade zone (sweat shop)and watched people sweat away while
the manager told us that "as people we dont know our limits until we have
tested them- and that is the motto we go buy here." All the while there are
signs all over the place saying "imagine better work" or "work without
error" which looks so much like "work will set you free" that I wanted to
vomit.

It is hard not to feel guilt, but in the end, we should feel pissed, and I just want to make sure that I do not go back to the same way of living. That I never go back to the same way of living. There are people starving and dying in the united states, and we have to remember that and work
every day for them, because working with and for eachother is the only way we can live and survive.
